How to turn on child SafeSearch mode in Google?
To turn on child SafeSearch mode in Google, particularly for accounts managed by a parent, Google Family Link is the primary method. SafeSearch is automatically turned on for users identified as under 18 or under 13 (or applicable age in your country) for accounts managed by Family Link. Parents also have the option to turn it off or block access to Search altogether.
Here’s how to manage SafeSearch for a child’s account:
Using Google Family Link:
- Open the Family Link app.
- Tap on your child’s profile.
- Go to the “Controls” menu.
- Tap “Google search”.
- Tap “Filter” to help limit explicit content in Google Search or Google Chrome. This enables SafeSearch and helps filter most explicit results like p****graphy.
Checking or Adjusting SafeSearch via Web Browser or Google App (for accounts not managed by Family Link, or to verify settings):
While SafeSearch should be automatically on for under-18s, it’s good to check. The setting applies to the account, not the device.
Via Web:
- Sign in to your child’s Google account at Google.com or with Chrome.
- Click their profile image in the top right and select “Manage your Google Account.”
- In the search bar within the account settings, type “safesearch” and press enter.
- Click “Go to SafeSearch settings.”
- Set SafeSearch to “Filter.”
Via Google App (Android):
- Open the Google app.
- Log in to your child’s account and tap their profile image in the top right.
- Tap “SafeSearch.”
- Set SafeSearch to “Filter.”
Important Notes:
- SafeSearch works only if the child is logged into their Google Account and will not apply to other search engines.
- It is recommended to also set broadband or device filters to block inappropriate websites.
- SafeSearch is an automated filter and is not 100% effective. It filters p****graphy and other offensive content but may not be completely accurate or reliable.
- Some third-party tools like Qustodio also offer features to enforce SafeSearch and prevent children from turning it off.
